Website Woes: 3 Signs Your Nonprofit Website Needs a Refresh

Your website is your nonprofit’s digital front door. It’s often the first impression you make on potential donors, volunteers, and partners. If that front door is broken, confusing, or outdated, you could be losing valuable support without even knowing it. Here are three clear signs it’s time for a refresh.

1. It’s Not Mobile-Friendly

This is the big one. More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. Open your website on your smartphone. Do you have to pinch and zoom to read the text? Are the buttons tiny and hard to press? If the experience is frustrating, you’re alienating a majority of your visitors. A modern website must be “responsive,” meaning it automatically adjusts to look great on any screen size.

2. Your “Donate” Button is Hard to Find

When someone feels inspired to give, you have a very small window to make it happen. Your “Donate” button should be the easiest thing to find on your site—ideally, it’s visible on every single page, often in the top right corner. If a potential donor has to click through multiple pages to figure out how to support you, they’re likely to give up.

3. It Hasn’t Been Updated in Months (or Years)

Does your homepage still feature news from last year’s fundraiser? Is your “Events” page empty or filled with past events? An out-of-date website sends a clear message: “No one is home.” It erodes trust and makes your organization look inactive. Your site should be a living, breathing reflection of the great work you’re doing right now.

A great website doesn’t need to be flashy or expensive. It needs to be clear, welcoming, and effective at helping visitors achieve their goals—whether that’s donating, volunteering, or learning about your mission.
